Pay It Forward In 1916, Lily Hardy Hammond wrote, “You don’t pay love back; you pay it forward.” In essence, Jesus told His disciples to do the same thing by telling them to love one another (John 13:34). We see the apostle John continuing to pay this lesson forward—as he encouraged other believers, he wrote, “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.” (1 John 4:7) We can also see this same principle of paying it forward within the life of the apostle Paul. He learned selflessness through Jesus and then made it his life’s goal to teach believers within the church to live in the same way. In his letter to the church of Philippi, he wrote, “Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus…” (Philippians 2:4-5) And in his letter to the church of Corinth he clearly showed he had a heart to share what he learned from God, by telling them, “For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you…” (1 Corinthians 11:23) Since we can clearly see the concept of paying it forward is from our Lord and written throughout the scriptures, it should motivate us to examine our own lives to see if we are actually paying forward what He has entrusted to us. Are we sharing the promises and truth contained within His Word when others are struggling? Are we doing what’s best for others no matter what it costs us? Are we distributing the resources He has so graciously given us into the lives of those who are in need? God has given each of us so much, such as our abilities, talents, resources, and His Word, just to mention a few. And He will be faithful to give us opportunities to share these things with others. Will we be willing to pay it forward? I want to encourage you to meditate upon these truths today.
