When transitioning into a new activity, Felicity becomes resistant to work with a verbal "no". Despite attempts to establish motivation, she escapes from her chair. When she begins to spontaneously communicate about her environment, it is used to tried to motivate her to "work first, then..." However, she still resists re-direction and pushes a chair over. She is given a choice to pick up the chair by herself or with help. She is not permitted to escape the situation. After a moment of waiting, she is offered the choice once again and praised for making a good choice to pick up the chair by herself and go to work. Once she is engaged in the task and demonstrating compliance, the tone is immediately positive and she is verbally praised (3 years old).
