Like the first sequel to John Carpenter’s Halloween 1978, Halloween 2 1981, the first sequel to David Gordon Green’s Halloween 2018, Halloween Kills, is primarily set in and around Haddonfield Memorial Hospital, where Laurie Strode is once again taken to recuperate from injuries she suffered from her traumatic encounter with Michael Myers at the end of Green’s Halloween. However, while the hospital setting proves to be effective in Halloween 2, specifically in terms of providing Michael with lots of instruments to work with, such as intravenous tubes and scalpels, the hospital setting in Halloween Kills primarily functions as a repository for underdeveloped characters and concepts. The biggest casualty is Laurie, who, once again played by Jamie Lee Curtis, spends the entire film confined to a hospital room without being given anything interesting to do or say. Like Halloween 2 Halloween Kills opens in the immediate aftermath of the previous film in the streets of Haddonfield Illinois, where a mob mentality has overtaken the town in the wake of Michael Myers' latest massacre. This sets the stage for a clumsy commentary on the dangers of misplaced rage and unresolved trauma through laughable dialogue that resembles Dr. Sam Loomis’s ridiculous attempt to “reason” with Michael’s conscience in tHalloween 5 The Revenge of Michael Myers. Through its bizarre sermonizing, disorganized plot, Laurie’s sidelining, and sheer stupidity, Halloween Kills feels disconnected from Carpenter’s Halloween franchise core creative principles, as is Halloween 3: Season of the Witch, the only film in the franchise that doesn’t feature Michael Myers. What’s most lacking from David Gordon Green’s Halloween sequel trilogy and the rest of the sequels, and what’s so omnipresent throughout John Carpenter’s Halloween, is the presence of pure evil. In Carpenter’s Halloween, this is brilliantly established in the film’s opening scene, in which young Michael Myers stabs his older sister to death while under the control of evil spirits. The psychology of evil is perhaps most clearly visualized in Carpenter’s Halloween through the image of the tombstone of Michael Myers’ murdered sister situated above the open-eyed corpse of Laurie Strode’s friend, Annie.
