We're half-way there now! Chapter 9 is complete, and it's another fairly long one. This chapter was a lot of fun with a few a couple pretty challenging parts, but nothing on the scale of chapter 6. There is a lot to explore in this level, so I took my time to make sure I didn't miss anything. Unfortunately, towards the end, I realized that I missed an item in chapter 8 (I didn't actually miss it, but I died after picking it up, and didn't realize that the item wasn't saved and never picked it back up) which prevented me from getting a health upgrade... very unfortunate! It was the antiquated coins that you can pick up in a chest directly after a fight when you first get the surf board thing. So far as I can tell, I've missed 1 purgatory gate in chapter 4, 1 gourdy in chapter 5, and now 1 mission item in chapter 8. Ugh... but on a more positive note, I went absolutely ham in the purgatory gate in this chapter LOL. This game has me fully hooked with its combat. For the boss of this chapter, again, I spent a fair bit of time in Trials taking him on and learning his tendencies. The 1st phase is really pretty straightforward, just don't get too greedy. There are a few really easy opportunities for parries in both phases, so take advantage of those, especially for the essence drops they provide! The 2nd phase is where things get tricky once he vomits up a bunch of zombies. This is the first boss I've encountered so far that I would not recommend locking onto (unless you're really good at switching targets). I don't normally use the lock-on feature except for boss fights, so I'm not very adept at switching targets on the fly. Take out as many of the zombies as you can with a UT (don't unleash it too soon because it WILL get deflected), and then give yourself space away from the boss while you focus on trying to take them out. You only have time to fully charge a UT when he initially vomits them up, otherwise, you'll be getting vomit spat at you or getting body slammed by the boss any time you attempt it. It's really difficult to focus on him while acid is coming at you from every direction, but if you're quick, you can build up your berserk meter to unleash a bunch of damage on the boss and any remaining zombies. The boss can basically one-shot you here, so be aware. Having an incense of rebirth is handy as well (I'm not at all ashamed to have used it here).
