Wide of King Momo, Queen and Princess of Carnival dancing samba STORYLINE: Rio de Janeiro's famous carnival celebration officially opened on Friday. The so-called king of Carnival - King Momo - received the key of the city from Rio Mayor Cesar Maia at city hall. Beforehand King Momo led a parade through the streets of the city to commemorate Rio's first carnival celebrations in the 1930s -- before the event became world famous and began attracting thousands of tourists. The parade included three antique Ford cars and people dressed as samba dancers did in the 30s. Marcelo Reis, 30, was elected King Momo for 2005, beating out 12 other competitors for the symbolic position. All of the candidates had to weigh over 100 kilos. Reis promised a peaceful carnival, which comes amid a wave of violence and killings among drug gangs in Rio's shantytowns. The Queen of Carnival is Ana Paulo Evangelista, a 24-year-old dancer. The Princess of Carnival is Cristiane Hani, 21, a primary school teacher in Rio. For the next five days, Brazilians will drop their normal routines and hold nearly nonstop parties as part of the Carnival celebration. A highlight is the spectacle at Rio's Sambadrome, where the city's 14 major samba schools put on million-dollar parades on Sunday and Monday nights.
