Florence Lam There is a cocoon, but nobody is inside 2024 Florence Lam reimagines Michele Chu’s delicate space as a cocoon—both an incubator and a sanctuary—where she resides overnight with 26 bean bags, each marking a year of her existence until an abortion reshaped her life. During her occupancy, the room is sealed, accessible only through mediated observation via barriers or a live camera feed. The live footage is overlaid with ultrasound scans of her womb during menstruation, weaving together the flows of time and cycles of body renewal. Throughout the performance, Lam exposes a host-guest dynamic from within, becoming an inhabitant of her own reproductive organ, resting, crafting, and signaling.
