Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Structural Rearrangements (PGT-SR) is a type of genetic testing that is used to identify embryos with chromosomal abnormalities before they are implanted in the uterus. This test is typically recommended for couples who have a known chromosomal rearrangement, such as a translocation or inversion. Chromosomal rearrangements occur when there is a change in the structure of a chromosome. This can happen when a piece of a chromosome is deleted, duplicated, or moved to another location. While many people with chromosomal rearrangements are healthy and unaware of their carrier status, they are at an increased risk of having children with chromosomal abnormalities. PGT-SR can help to reduce the risk of having a child with a chromosomal abnormality by identifying embryos that have the correct chromosomal makeup.
