Where did Part 145 come from — and why does it still matter today? In this video, Jonathan Ewing explains the historical origins of Part 145 repair stations and how World War II exposed the dangers of inconsistent maintenance practices. During the war, thousands of aircraft were repaired by contractors across the country. But without standardized tooling, training, and inspection protocols, safety suffered. Aircraft were being lost — not just in combat, but due to inconsistent maintenance standards. That problem ultimately led to federal oversight and standardized repair station regulation under the Federal Aviation Act — giving rise to the FARs and modern Part 145 requirements. But this isn’t just history. Every time a repair station’s procedures drift… Every time a manual doesn’t reflect operational reality… The same risks Part 145 was designed to prevent begin to reappear. Standardization is safety. And the repair stations that understand that history operate differently. If you manage or operate a Part 145 repair station, this is foundational.
