The Dartmouth Steam Railway & the station with no tracks or trains!

The first in a series of trips on Britain’s loveliest steam railways, Green Signals visits the Dartmouth Steam Railway and River Boat Company in Paignton, Devon. Opened all the way to Kingswear in 1864, the railway line ceased being operated by British Rail in October 1972 but opened again as a tourist line very soon after having passed into the ownership of the Dart Valley Railway in December 1972. The line is considered one of Britian’s most beautiful starting its journey at Paignton, passing Goodrington Sands and offering spectacular views over the bay towards Torquay and Brixham. The line then turns inland though Churston and over viaducts and through Greenway tunnel before heading alongside the Dart Estuary before descending down a steep gradient of 1 in 66 to Kingswear. From the day it opened, the railway company has also operated the ferry to Dartmouth. Although served by no track or trains, the station at Dartmouth could sell tickets to destinations across the whole of Britain and as such was classified as a railway station.
