This Road to Recovery webinar featured Hali Roderick and Scott Blundo discussing the critical role of emotional regulation and emotional safety in sexual addiction recovery, emphasizing that sobriety from acting-out behaviors is just the first step—true healing requires developing "emotional sobriety" where individuals learn to identify, navigate, and manage their emotions rather than letting defensive reactions like anger, minimization, or gaslighting damage the relationship further. Scott explained that most men struggling with addiction have minimal emotional vocabulary and body awareness, operating on autopilot with suppressed feelings that surface intensely once substances or behaviors are removed, making it essential to use tools like feelings wheels and apps like "How We Feel" to start building awareness of what they're feeling and where they feel it in their bodies. Hali and Scott stressed that emotional safety for betrayed partners means the addicted partner's presence either calms their nervous system during triggers or at minimum doesn't escalate their distress—requiring men to manage their own childhood wounds (feelings of unworthiness, not mattering, not being good enough) so they don't react defensively when partners express legitimate pain or make valid requests for accountability. They emphasized that sharing emotions with partners must follow three rules: 1. Don't blame others for your feelings 2. Don't ask them to fix how you're feeling 3. Don't act on your feelings through defensive behaviors Instead, men should share what they're experiencing while taking ownership of managing it through their recovery team (coach, therapist, sponsor, group).
