In this video I basically show "lexicon style" different kinds of microphones of the VSL Synchron Bösendorfer Imperial and Steinway D-274 on their own, and also compare the Standard Player Preset with added room sound. By this you should be able to decide, if the standard library is enough or if the full library makes sense for you. At least I hope it helps in this decision. Also I demonstrate the default sound, which equals ALL microphones at the same time for the ultimate room sound. I will use the following abbreviations: C - Chopin Mazurka Op.7/1 Ba - Bach BWV 904 Bo - Bösendorfer Imperial S - Steinway Mic - Microphone You can read the abbreviations as CBo === " Chopin on the Bösendorfer , [...] " or BaS === " Bach on the Steinway , [...] " ------------------ The timestamps ----------------- 0:00 Introduction 4:22 CBo, All mics 6:32 CBo, Condenser mic 7:56 CBo, Ribbon mic 9:16 CBo, Tube mic 10:48 CBo, Mid1 mic 12:30 CBo, Surround mic 15:10 CBo, Player Position Standard 16:39 CBo, Player Position Full (i.e. with added room mics) 19:42 BaS, All mics 22:27 BaS, Condenser mic 23:52 BaS, Ribbon mic 24:53 BaS, Tube mic 25:55 BaS, Surround mic 27:36 CS, Ribbon mic 28:27 CS, all microphones, 29:24 CS, Player Standard 29:58 CS, Added mics to Player Standard 31:03 S Debussy Prelude 1 -------------------------------- The idea is not necessarily that you watch everything, but to jump right to the sound which you are interested in hearing. I used the freeware OpenShot, a program which I think personally hates me. Anyways, at least I could get some kind of amateurish video together lol. My opinion is that the upgrade is, due to the fairly high price, something where you really have to think about if it is worth for you, especially if you are "only" a piano player. I mean in orchestral context etc. it's clear that it will be the full. But for me personally it is worth to have the full library even only as piano player. I noticed this fact when I used the player position and added the room mics in just for fun. I just felt more immersed while playing. Also the question is, do you REALLY want the best sound or just "quite good sound and feel". For quite good there are also other libraries out there which are cheaper and not so versatile. For "quite good" the standard is also enough. Of course everybody has to try it out on their own.. I hope this video helps in determining what is useful for you! Of course, needless to say, the libraries are really very very good. I would not be surprised at all if a good mix down recording would be not distinguished from an actual real live recording by the average piano player. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I play every video myself via Digital Piano, VST Plugins and lot of work.
