(19 Jan 2011) HEADLINE: Experts: Don't worry about dead birds CAPTION: Just a few days after 3,000 blackbirds fell from the sky in Arkansas, about 500 birds dropped to their death in Louisiana. But biologists say these types of die-offs happen all the time. (Jan. 7) NB. THIS IS A VOICEOVER TRANSCRIPT, NOT A FULL SHOT LIST FIRST IT WAS THE NEW YEARS EVE BLACKBIRDS IN ARKANSAS. THEN A FEW DAYS LATER... THE SAME THING IN LOUISIANA. 3500 BIRDS IN TWO STATES DROPPED DEAD. BLOGS LIT UP WITH DIRE WARNINGS OF APOCALYPSE. BUT BIOLOGISTS WITH THE U-S GEOLOGICAL SURVEY SAY IT'S NOT FIRE AND BRIMSTONE. Scott Wright/National Wildlife Health Center Wildlife dieoffs of birds and other animals across the globe is a fairly common occurence. It happens every year in numerous species all around the globe. HERE'S A MAP FROM THE U-S GEOLOGICAL SURVEY. THIS IS ALL THE REPORTED MASS DEATHS OF SPECIES FROM JUST 20-10. THE ANIMALS RANGE FROM FROGS TO BIRDS, SALAMANDERS TO SHEEP. AND THE NUMBER OF DEAD RANGES FROM TEN TO THOUSANDS. THE UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA'S SOUTHEASTERN WILDLIFE DISEASE STUDY IS EXAMINING SOME OF THE BIRDS FROM THE TWO STATES. THEY'LL DISSECT THEM AND RUN NUMEROUS TESTS. These samples are then used for additional tests including microscopic examination look ing for bacteria, viruses, parasites, fungal organism and even toxins as potential causes of death. JOHN FISCHER IS THE PROGRAM'S DIRECTOR. HE SAYS ANY NUMBER OF THINGS COULD HAVE CAUSED THE MASS DIE-OFFS AROUND THE NEW YEARS HOLIDAY. We'll look for underlying causes. Some of these infectious diseases, some of the toxins affect the central nervous system which in turn affect the bird's coordination and ability to fly. SCOTT WRIGHT FROM THE NATIONAL WILDLIFE HEALTH CENTER SAYS IT COULD ALSO HAVE BEEN A HUMAN INTERVENTION. SAY... NEW YEARS EVE FIREWORKS. Potential human activity forced the birds off their nighttime roost, which is abnormal for these species, causing them to fly in large numbers into surrounding objects which happened to be people's homes. WHETHER IT WAS FIREWORKS, FUNGUS, A VIRUS OR A PARASITE, BIOLOGISTS SAY THERE ARE PLENTY OF POTENTIAL EXPLANATIONS. AND THERE WILL BE PLENTY MORE CASES IN THE FUTURE.
