1999, N64. Rating: 3 out of 4 stars One of the more famous parts of The Phantom Menace was the podcast race, which was a great spectacle that felt like the sci-fi version of Ben-Hur. So, true to form, Lucasarts decided to make a game out of that concept with more than 20 tracks that take place throughout the galaxy. Racer takes a few cues from other racers such as Extreme-G and F-Zero X by putting less emphasis on the visuals and more on the framerate and the feeling we are going as fast as possible. This is a good decision because the movie certainly delivered on that feeling and the game needs that sensation, as well. The visuals are better than F-Zero X, which took the concept to an extreme and left very little other than the racetracks and the cars. Some of the environments do show tearing and there can be visual muddiness, particularly with some of the darker racetracks. In terms of track design, Lucasarts have many of the same courses with variations throughout, which can make it feel like they’re repeating themselves. That’s unfortunate because the variants often don’t do enough to make them stand out from their predecessors. There are some neat tricks and shortcuts the player will want to take advantage of, particularly in the later stages when the courses become much tougher and the AI more aggressive. Being precise and avoiding crashes is a necessity and there are enough tricks and traps to keep the player on their toes. The track length is another issue with Racer, which is something Mario Kart 64 dealt with, as well. Most of the courses are anywhere from 1 to 2 minutes per lap. The longer ones can get as high as three minutes. Unfortunately, the track design doesn’t always justify this and the longer tracks end up becoming boring rather than exhilarating. The music, as expected, is first-rate because it’s being taken from Phantom Menace’s soundtrack. John Williams is always a win, though I wished they’d taken a few musical cues from other songs. Hearing the same song on loop five or six times in a race can be exhausting. The sound effects also are terrific and it helps create an immersive experience. Racer is a step above Mario Kart 64, but the repetitive game design keeps it well behind F-Zero X, which managed to find new wrinkles without going to the same well. If nothing else, it’s the best property related to Episode I and maybe the prequel trilogy as a whole. 0:00 Boonta Training Course 4:34 Mon Gazza Speedway 6:20 Beedo's Wild Ride 11:56 Aquilaris Classic 16:48 Malastare 100 20:31 Vengeance 26:50 Spice Mine Run 35:55 Ando Prime Centrum 40:53 Sunken City 48:17 Howler Gorge 54:25 Dug Derby 57:35 Scrapper's Run 1:01:13 Zugga Challenge 1:09:08 Baroo Coast 1:16:15 Bumpy's Breakers 1:26:04 Executioner 1:32:22 Sebulba's Legacy 1:36:04 Grabvine Gateway 1:43:48 Andobi Mountain Run 1:50:36 Dethro's Revenge 1:54:41 Fire Mountain Rally 2:03:40 The Boonta Classic 2:13:08 Abyss 2:17:32 The Gauntlet 2:26:05 Inferno
