There are various reason why there is a foreign body sensation under the eyelid. The commonest of course is foreign body in the eye. This needs to be removed. However in many cases, there may not be a foreign body and the person may have a sensation as if something is there. This happens more common in dry eye disease syndrome, computer vision syndrome, allergic conjunctivitis, meibominitis, and blepheritis. It can also happen for a simple reason that the person is not blinking for a very long time. There various ways how it can be removed is, number one, increase the blink rate. When we say increase the blink rate, it should atleast be 15 to 20 times, in a minute. Number two, you can give cold compress, you can take ice cube or cold water and put it into a towel and apply it on the closed lids. Third, if there is meibominitis or blepheritis, we can give hot fermentation instead of cold, we use warm water compress and we use shampoos, usually baby shampoo scrubs an wash it out. This might also reduce the foreign body sensation. If none of this works, the best is to consult an ophthalmologist who will remove the foreign body if it is there or he might prescribe some medicines to correct the dry eyes or the allergic conjunctivitis.
