I built this for my 2 daughters - both are into track and field and I couldn't figure out how to build a cheap high jump pit so this was the next best thing. These things sell for around $350. You should be able to buy the materals you need at home depot for under $50. Tools: drill with 5/16" bit and 1/16" bit saw to cut PVC - table saw or circular saw or hand saw Materials: 3x10' 1.5" PVC pipe 3 elbows two 3-way connectors 3 end-caps PVC glue/cement 24" threaded metal rod 5/16" 48 nuts 5/16" 24 wood shims about 1" x 10" each (you can make these out of cheap cedar shingles from home depot) some sand (to put into PVC base for weight/stability) 2 tiny eye hooks and some rope 1) Cut PVC to 4 x 3', 1 x 19.5", 2 x 1' and one vertical piece that will be cut somewhere around 7' or 8' depending on how high you want it. first determine how high you want the lowest shim, then subtract 6 inches and cut to that length. I was making for my 13yo and 10yo girls - lowest wedge was about 7'10", highest was around 9'6" 2) assemble base - glue end caps onto two 3' sections. (wait a couple minutes) then add sand to the 3-feet sections with caps - fill sand to top;. attach elbows to both sides with glue, then attach another 3 foot section to the elbow with glue; fill both sections with sand after attaching; attach 3-way connector - this is tricky and is best done with a partner - you will likely spill a little sand. put the long vertical section into the middle slot on the 3-way connector - one person hold that vertical (best to use a level) the other person glues the two sand-filled sections into the other ports on the 3-way 3) assemble top part - glue end caps on two 1' sections; drill a 5/16 hole straight through each, about 1" from end-cap. put rod into these sections and put wing nuts on each end of rod; glue 2 elbows to each end of the 19.5" section; glue the bottom 1' section to one elbow, then attach the top 1' section to the other elbow but don't glue yet. 4) add your shims: drill a 5/16" hole in the back side of each shim (careful you don't break the shim); while rod is still in the pvc with two wing nuts on, mark the bottom of the rod exposed above the bottom PVC so you know where to put the bottom nut; remove rod from PVC; put two nuts on the rod - bottom one at your mark, top nut right against the bottom nut - put a shim on, put two more nuts on and tighten until shim is a little hard to move around; repeat this process until all shims are on and put two nuts on top; 5) Finish 'er up: put bottom of rod into pvc and put wing nut barely on bottom - detach the top pvc from the elbow (this is why you didn't glue it!) and put the top of rod through holes in PVC, then glue back onto the elbow; gluethe top apparatus to the vertical pole; glue it all onto the base. drill two tiny holes into the end caps of the base facing up (smallest bit you have maybe 1/16 or 1/8); screw in two small eye hooks; attach rope as shown
