Today we drove about an hour east of Palermo, Sicily to the Castle of Caltavutoro --Castello di Caltavuturo. We are Beth and Brian, “The Bees.” We are a couple of Americans that retired early in 2018 and moved to France to chill out and enjoy life. We travel a lot in France -- and throughout Europe -- and we love sharing our village life experiences and the hidden gems we discover in our travels. Caltavutoro is definitely a hidden gem. When it was built by the Saracens in the 9th century it was completely enclosed by enormous walls and occupied an area of about 10,000 square feet. It had stables, armouries, kitchens, halls, bedrooms, granaries, cellars and even a mill. So it was pretty autonomous. By the 17th century, though, the castle was completely abandoned — and that was when the first houses started getting built outside the city walls. Today? Well… there’s not much left of the castle but it’s an absolutely gorgeous ruin and a great walk … and we’d definitely recommend a visit. We hope you enjoy the video and if you do?
