When you start a U.S. company, whether it's an LLC, a corporation, a partnership, or something else, you are bound by U.S. tax law and required to report and pay tax on income generated within the country. To comply with these requirements, the company needs to have an ID number that the Internal Revenue Service can use to identify it.
