The County Council’s Committee of the Whole moved an ordinance out of committee and to the Council meeting of Tuesday, March 3, 2026, setting the conditions for a potential vote on establishing a dedicated funding source for the county’s justice and public safety system. The funding source would come from implementing a one-tenth of one percent sales and use tax, which amounts to 10 cents for every $100 spent, with groceries, medicine, and certain medical supplies and hygiene products exempt from the tax. New taxes require a supermajority of the Council, or five of seven votes in the affirmative, to pass, and it requires the signature of the Executive to become law.
