Independent Review of the Criminal Courts, Part 1 - Justice Committee

The Justice Committee will hear from Sir Brian Leveson during an evidence session in Parliament examining the Independent Review of the Criminal Courts Part 1. Discussion is expected to focus on the recommendations outlined in the ‘Leveson Review’ Part 1 published in July, relating to the Magistrates’ Court, the Crown Court and the right to trial by jury. In December 2024, the then Lord Chancellor in a written statement to the House acknowledged that the justice system was ‘in crisis with huge delays to hearings and victims left in limbo waiting to see justice done’. The statement announced Sir Brian Leveson would ‘undertake a review of our criminal courts to consider how we can speed up the hearing of cases’.
