The Siem Reap International Airport ----------------------------------- The Siem Reap International Airport Has a rich history, from its opening in 1932 under French supervision, to its modern terminal inaugurated in 2006. Over the years, it has become a hub for Siem Reap tourists. But with growing demands and traffic, the airport was struggling to keep up with its capacity of over 10 million passengers per annum. The Government of Cambodia saw the need to build a new airport to handle future traffic and eventually replace the present one. The new airport, Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport, is located 50 km southeast of Siem Reap and 40 km from Angkor Wat. It is being built in three phases, with the first phase scheduled to finish in October 2023 and handle 5-7 million passengers annually. As construction work continues to progress, phase one has reached 100% completion as of end-September. The new airport is scheduled to open on the 16th of October 2023. Once open, the old airport will be permanently closed on October 15. The new Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport will have a significant impact on tourists visiting Siem Reap and those intending to travel to Cambodia in the future.
