Recorded on November 12, 1972, this archival concert offers a rare glimpse into a moment when chamber music traditions and modern voices quietly coexisted in the same room. Preserved on tape and presented here from the archives of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the program spans more than two centuries of music—from the elegant conversation of the Baroque era to the rhythmic tension of the twentieth century. The performance opens with Georg Philipp Telemann’s Trio Sonata for Flute, Violin, and Continuo in A minor, a work defined by clarity, balance, and intimacy. Johannes Brahms’ Trio for Clarinet, Cello, and Piano in A minor, Op. 114 follows, offering a deeply reflective late work filled with warmth and restraint. At the center of the program is Elliott Carter’s Eight Études and a Fantasy for Woodwind Quartet, a striking contrast—restless, intricate, and alive with independent voices, capturing the sound of modernism as it was still unfolding. The concert then turns to Ludwig van Beethoven’s Trio in E-flat major, Op. 1, No. 1, a piece that already hints at the composer’s ambition to expand form and expression. The afternoon concludes with Brahms’ Variations on a Theme by Haydn for Two Pianos, Op. 56b, a work of architectural breadth and luminous strength.
