Marc Allum hears the fascinating tale of a carved stone head discovered in a back garden, which was then stolen from the owner but mysteriously returned years later. Frances Christie is charmed by a portrait of a dog by Bradford-born artist Wright Barker – one of the foremost painters of domestic animals during the Victorian period – which was given by the artist to his plumber in lieu of payment. Matthew Haley discovers a rare British newspaper from 1926, published by the government during the General Strike, and featuring the signatures of both Winston Churchill and the then prime minister Stanley Baldwin. Joanna Hardy challenges Fiona Bruce to ‘Basic, Better, Best’ with three exquisite items of art deco jewellery ranging in price from £20,000 to a staggering £100,000. Meanwhile, Richard Price is thrilled to see a 1970s Patek Philippe watch made from glistening ‘tiger’s eye’ gemstones and diamonds, which was given as a wedding present to the owner.
