He understood that one of our biggest challenges is deciding who to trust. So many of us wear different masks to play different roles in our lives and deciding where we are safe being our authentic, vulnerable selves can often be tricky There are a lot of masks in Much Ado About Nothing and not just at the masquerade. The entire plot hinges on deception and mistaken identity. Benedick and Beatrice hide their attraction behind insults. Don Pedro pretends to be Claudio whom Don John pretends to mistake for Benedick. Don Pedro plots with Leonato and Claudio to trick Benedick into love with Beatrice, and even sweet young Hero conspires with Ursula to deceive Beatrice into loving Benedick. And then Don John tricks Don Pedro and Claudio into believing that Margaret is Hero, until even Leonato doesn't know whether or not to trust his own daughter, The only solution is another trick: the Friar's plan to pretend that Hero is dead while the villains' plot to shame her is unraveled Unlike Romeo and Juliet, where the schemes all go tragically awry, this time the truth wins out and love conquers all. Don John's villainy is revealed and when the masks are removed Hero lives to wed Claudio, and the love that Beatrice and Benedick were tricked into turns out to be real. One of the other amazing qualities of Shakespeare's work is that it still feels fresh and real in the hands of each generation. Working with the extraordinary young theatre artists of the Highlander Theatre Co. for the first time has been a huge privilege and great joy.
