Toccata (Suite, Opus 5) - Maurice Duruflé - David Briggs plays the 2011 Rieger organ of the Michaeliskirche, Munich Two months ago I had the wonderful experience of performing again on the stunning Rieger organ in the Michaeliskirche, in the centre of Munich. This instrument was one of the last to be voiced by the former head voicer of Rieger, Mr Michel Garnier. As you will hear, even as recorded on an iPhone, it’s pretty wonderful. The last piece of the concert was one of my favorites, the Toccata from the Suite Op. 5, composed in 1933 by Maurice Duruflé. He dedicated the three-movement Suite to Paul Dukas, his composition teacher and the concluding Toccata is a dazzling showpiece for both composer and performer. Duruflé was apparently never completely satisfied with it, revising it several times for different printings. Duruflé visited London in 1938 at the request of the Organ Music Society to play his Suite at Christ Church, Woburn Square, and supplied the following note about the work: 'The Toccata, which is in ternary form, begins with a short introduction, preparatory to the entry of the rhythmic and vigorous principal theme, which is given to the pedals. In the middle section, a second theme appears, and is later combined with the first. Finally, a return to the opening measures, and a brilliant conclusion with the second theme.' You might well spot the headphones! These are linked to the outstanding sound system in the church, whereby you can hear the sound of the instrument half way down the nave, in very good quality. It’s salutary, the way it changes the way you play. It was also 54f (just 12 degrees C) - hence the bundling up! The way this church was completely rebuilt in the 1950’s is totally inspirational, after the RAF almost totally destroyed it (apart from the side walls and west end) in 1944. Truly a phoenix rising out of the ashes…
