What are digital footprints and how can they be useful for managers of nature recreation areas? In this video, researchers from the Digital Geography Lab, University of Helsinki, explain how digital and physical footprints are linked. The use of digital devices generates a massive amount of georeferenced big data. This "Mobile Big Data" offers significant potential to understand nature recreation: where and when people are present and how they interact with their environments. Visitor and use information is needed for sustainable management of nature areas. However, interpreting Mobile Big Data can be challenging; it's essential to have the right questions in mind to unlock its insights. This video was made during the VIMAS Training School 2025. The VIMAS project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement No. 101120250. This work is also supported by the Kone Foundation (project MOBICON).
