Clayton https://amzn.to/3ljtjS4 By ancient standards, this tomb was so large and lavishly decorated that it quickly made it onto ancient writer’s lists of the seven sights to be seen in their known world, and it’s because of Maussollos’ tomb’s popularity that by the time the Romans showed up to the party, the word Mausoleum had become the go-to word for any large tomb. It’s possible that Maussollos wanted his mausoleum to symbolise a fusion of all the surrounding civilisations and cultures, maybe even in the hopes of establishing a Carian empire with Halicarnassus at its centre.
