Classic Detective Stories: Ingenious Thefts | A Bitesized Audio Anthology (Vol 3)

A compilation of seven classic detective stories with a shared theme of ingenious theft, by authors including Arthur Conan Doyle, Arthur Morrison, L. T. Meade and Ernest Bramah. See below for a list of stories and timestamps. Curated and narrated by Simon Stanhope for Bitesized Audio. Note: these stories are available individually on the channel if you prefer to listen that way, but I've taken the opportunity while compiling this anthology to re-edit and remaster the older recordings. This is volume 3 of 3. T. Meade and Robert Eustace John Bell takes a summer holiday on a friend's houseboat, where he puts aside his ghost hunting to help with the search for some stolen diamonds; but he soon finds himself diverted into investigating a Thames lock-keeper's story of haunting by an uncanny, ghostly voice echoing across the river... First published in Cassell's Magazine, September 1897. 00:51:42 The Red-Headed League, by Arthur Conan Doyle One of the best-loved Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, in which the detective is consulted by Mr. Jabez Wilson, who is upset at the loss of his well-paid but bizarrely pointless part-time employment. Holmes soon deduces that an ingenious and daring crime is in preparation... First published in The Strand Magazine, August 1891. 01:48:55 The Case of the Dixon Torpedo, by Arthur Morrison Private Detective Martin Hewitt is consulted by an engineer who has fallen victim to an impossible theft: important naval blueprints have gone missing from his suite of offices, although nobody has entered or left the office since the drawings were last seen... First published in The Strand Magazine, June 1894. 02:39:21 The Last Exploit of Harry the Actor, by Ernest Bramah The Lucas Street Safe Deposit proudly claims itself to be impregnable, with multiple layers of security, including keys and passwords, to gain access. While accompanying his friend Mr. Carlyle on a visit to "The Safe", the blind detective Max Carrados perceives sounds and smells which lead him to suspect that an audacious theft is in preparation... First published under the title 'The Great Safe Deposit Coup' in The News of the World, on 5 October 1913. 04:03:28 How He Cut His Stick, by M. McDonnell Bodkin A classic "locked room mystery" set on the railway, involving an audacious and inexplicable theft from a locked carriage on a train travelling at 60 miles per hour. The bank directors request Dora Myrl to investigate... Published as part of a collection of Bodkin's stories entitled 'Dora Myrl, the Lady Detective' in 1900. 04:28:30 The Blue Carbuncle, by Arthur Conan Doyle A festive Sherlock Holmes adventure, in which the great detective follows a trail of clues connecting a battered old hat and a lost Christmas goose to the notorious theft of a valuable gem, the blue carbuncle. First published in The Strand Magazine, January 1892. 05:18:29 The Man Who Called Himself Hamilton Cleek, by Thomas W. Hanshew Superintendent Maverick Narkom of Scotland Yard is on the hunt for "the vanishing cracksman", a daring thief who is a master of disguise. PC Collins, on point duty at Blackfriars Bridge, could be the man to nab him at last... This story actually forms the prologue to the 1910 volume 'Cleek, the Master Detective' and serves as an introduction to the character and how he came to join the forces of law and order after working against them.
