Promise in the Waiting

Abram and Sarai waited a long time from God's promised child. Custom in those times allowed for Sarai to give her servant, Hagar, to Abram so that she may bear a child for Sarai. While Sarai and Abram tried to take God's promise into their own hands, God had other plans. Hagar gave birth to a son, but God made it clear that this child was not the covenant child through which his promise would be fulfilled. From their acts of impatience and doubt Abram and Sarai allowed for a conflict to arise between brothers that would span thousands of years and many nations.
