Recognizing and securing the tenure rights of indigenous peoples and local communities play an important role in reducing deforestation and combatting climate change. Historically, these groups have been effective stewards of the world’s forests. Even today, vast areas of the world’s forest cover lies within the territories of indigenous peoples and local communities. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has helped to enhance tenure rights through the creation of Open Tenure, an open-source mobile application that enables community-based mapping and recording of tenure rights holders. In May 2021, FAO, under the UN-REDD Programme, hosted the webinar “Open Tenure: a mapping tool to enhance REDD+ efforts.” The webinar was conducted in English, Spanish and French and had the objectives of: • Guiding users through the basic workings of Open Tenure • Sharing information on the on-the-ground experiences from Tunisia, Guatemala and Uganda- where the tool has already been put to use • Sparking further discussion of the tool through a question-and-answer session Key words: forests, REDD+, tenure, indigenous peoples, local communities, indigenous, climate, climate change, deforestation, UN-REDD, UN-REDD Programme, FAO, UNEP, UNDP, forestry, webinar, open-tenure, tool, solution
