This past December, I was asked to give a talk on “The Future of Design” for The Art Directors Club’s “Meet the Board” series. Because I apparently enjoy embarrassing myself in front of industry legends, I said yes. Surprisingly, the talk resonated. So I turned it into a video. It’s the story of a mistake I made early in my career, a mistake that accidentally changed everything. In a time when AI-generated design is everywhere... mimicking, generalizing, auto-polishing.... it begs the question: Can it use the wrong tool at the wrong time, under pressure… wrongly?? Does it feel panic or misclick out of fear? Does it crave the approval of a mentor or work with the intensity of a person about to be fired? Nope. Which is why I believe the future of design isn’t clean. It’s ugly. It’s human. And it’s powered by the glorious chaos of mistakes. If you’re a designer, filmmaker, creative, or just a curious human navigating this shift, you’re in the right place.
