Ninja Theory's Hellblade (2017) was critically acclaimed for its representation of mental illness, but I'd argue that the many sad and twisted characters in Heavenly Sword (2007) - the studio's hauntingly familial take on the wuxia genre - provide a more poignant and unsettling (if also even more outlandish) representation of psychological torment than Senua's world-twisting psychosis. Indeed, what I remember most from my only playthrough of HS is the conflicted main protagonist Nariko, her interactions with the wildly erratic Kai and the evil King Bohan's tragicomically abusive relationship with his generals and henchmen (including his own mentally challenged son). As for the gameplay, Heavenly Sword is an early PS3 title weighed down by an unstable frame rate, clunky motion controls, annoying Quick Time Events and repetitive combat that never feels particularly satisfying. Going back to it for the first time in 10 years was a somewhat painful experience, and the best thing you can say about it is that the simplified action in Hellblade makes a lot of sense when compared with what Ninja Theory attempted to do earlier in the developer's history.
