Antonín Dvořák's The Noon Witch (Polednice), composed in 1896, is a symphonic poem based on a Czech folktale. It is one of five late symphonic poems Dvořák wrote, inspired by the poetry of Karel Jaromír Erben's collection Kytice, which recounts eerie and often tragic folklore. The piece tells the tale of a disobedient child and his overwhelmed mother. Frustrated by her son's misbehavior, the mother warns him that if he does not behave, the Noon Witch (Polednice)-a supernatural figure who haunts the noonday hours-will come for him. As the clock strikes noon, the menacing presence of the witch appears. Terrified, the mother tries to shield her child, but in her panic, she accidentally smothers him. When the father returns home, he finds his wife in despair and their son lifeless.
