You would hardly guess that Khanyisa was a little pink elephant with all that orange sand and wet brown mud layering her body! After a swim though, she is all albino underneath. Over time it may seem like her skin darkens, but were she to properly exfoliate all the collective dirt gathered over time, you would see her light distinctive skin. Khanyisa uses her little trunk to scratch her eyes and wipe away any dust and is soon joined by big sister, Limpopo, who simply can't bear not being part of the action! Limpopo can be a bit rough sometimes with Khanyisa, not really knowing her strength, which is very different to other youngsters, Kumbura and Klaserie, who are much more gentle with the calf and in general. Tokwe no doubt sees her daughter is up to something and moves in to stand beside Khanyisa and Limpopo. Khanyisa cleverly flops over and enjoys the benefit of the sand shower all around her, with the dust helping to coat and protect her skin from biting insects and the sun - especially with her skin being more sensitive. Were it as easy for the much bigger elephants to lie down like Khanyisa, considering their immense weight, they no doubt would! It's much easier for small elephants to lie down and get back up, although some swaying and maybe a foot offered in assistance is needed sometimes. Lundi joins the females and Khanyisa seems to instantly get up and follow Mom off to the shade and trees. The two are amazingly bonded, considering that it isn't blood that links them but quality time, and very strong maternal instincts.
