Thoughts: Likely my favorite looking housing for Realforce, anything that looks like an R1 is something nice in my eyes lol. I don't normally like coated boards, but this is a good feeling one I think, and also might help with some sound related stuff too but I'll comment later. I wish the angle was higher and front height was a bit lower but I'll take what I can get, I just really think that default realforce angle is a bit too low for me and the front height makes it less comfortable vs a stock board. I've had a terrible experience with the quality and result from another Sho board, but this is actually a pretty good result so far. I ended up taking the internals out of my 86u and just slapping it in here, and the result is actually quite pleasing. Stiffer and a bit more crisp in feel and that makes it feel fun and interesting, a bit more resonant than stock which makes it feel a bit more lively too. I don't know how I feel about the pitch of the board increasing but honestly for throwing in something without much thought, the results actually are pleasing. It works well with 55g domes as the stiffness emphasizes the snappiness and also the way you type on the board makes the weight feel a bit less fatiguing vs stock imo. I am mixed on how I feel vs a classic realforce case, I still might like the feel and sound more of a stock plastic realforce case, but this is different in a good way, you get a stiffer and cleaner experience which I think works out better for a realforce than it does an hhkb. I bet the coat vs ano is different with the coat being a bit less resonant, and that's a plus here, but don't have 2 to test. I can't really compare against much because I don't have too much experience with aftermarket topre housings that I've enjoyed, but I don't regret using this which is better than I can say about most housings. I'd really like to get a Norbaforce in at the same time to compare side by side since that was the only other housing I enjoyed mostly for a realforce. It's better than I expected, I don't know if I'd take it over stock yet, but it's a worthwhile difference that I'd like to try more builds in. This is stereo test 3, improving still, but I'm really limited by the mics I currently still have, and kicking myself for not still having the right mics to do this stuff with lol. I'll really think about investing in some proper M-S recording options. But I think in the meantime unless I see something different, I'll be going back to mono recording with the 2 mics separately. The deskmat also clearly changed, same mat with a different color and slightly more isolating than the last being the softer option, I will be using this from now on as it minimizes more of the desk resonance but not to an unfaithful degree. Yes it's stained, and the more I tried to clean it the more it made it worse, I'll find a way eventually lol. The next release will be my recording schizo rambling, please check it out if you have any interest lol. Build: Sho SRX - Beige Coat Steel Top Mount 86u internals w/ 55g lubed Equipment: Josephson C716 → Crane Song Flamingo.1 → Prism Lyra 2 / Neumann U87i (Thiersch Reskin) → Flamingo → Lyra / Nikon D5500 C716 head level, from seating position, on axis centered alphas, cardioid pattern, decoupled. U87i directly above 716 at 90deg angle, Figure 8, partially coupled. Max -6db peak (excluding camera), no further processing. C716 is accurate and honest to typing in person to my ear, extremely sensitive though. U87i is also honest but slight sweetness and grandness with slight grit, reskin and mods add some clarity and slight treble boost at cost of smoothness, scuffed MidSide setup. Crappy cam mic cause why not. Bad IKEA slab into acoustic membrane on concrete (slightly hollow and thinner sounding, weighted down with heavy equipment, isolated from floor) Aiglatson Studio Synchronize Jacquard (thicker and slightly stiffer, partially isolates from desk)
