"Mi Vecino" is an upbeat and joyful Grade 2+/3- work for Concert Band written in the "Son-Montuno" style (Afro-Cuban) and requires no prior knowledge of Latin styles to achieve an authentic performance. "Mi Vecino" offers (1) carefully modified percussion parts for maximum accessibility yet high cultural authenticity, (2) a unison rhythm "prep" sheet to help all students quickly learn the syncopated rhythms used throughout the piece, (3) optional Piano and Double Bass (or Synth Bass) parts for reinforcement, as well as, (4) an optional open solo section with interchangeable/flexible background figures and arpeggiations included on the student parts- in order to help all students become more comfortable with improvisation and have a chance to shine at your concerts. Students can play as brief a solo as 8 measures to allow many students a chance to present a solo. It is recommended to allow students to play either an improvised or self-written solo to encourage creativity/composition, and to foster self-confidence. This one is truly a great way to end your concert. The audience will not be able to sit still during the performance! This piece was commissioned by Music & Arts Advocacy and is available for download until October 15, 2025, at which time it will become available for purchase from Michele Fernández Music at www.Michele-Fernandez.com *Michele Fernández (composer) was born in New York City (NY) and raised in Miami, FL.
