One of many methods to start encouraging a dog to hold and return to hand a thrown dummy. This only works with a dog that is picking but showing aversion to recall or returning the dummy to you, it may even spit the dummy at your feet or a distance from you. How to setup! 1. Pick a safe area for the dog that it feels at ease, a hall in a house, kennel run but away from kennel door 2. I do not use a trailing lead here but you can if your dog is hand averse, I like to use trailing lead for a longish period in my pups to stop hand problems that occur with the flighty or timid pup. 3. Only throw the dummy a short distance and follow it up quick, you have advantage you know when it is being thrown 4. Usually the dog turns after picking and your right their to take the dummy from its mouth 5. Do not flog this exercise repeatedly but keep it calm and do not be harsh in handling or voice like in all problem dogs 6. Give lots of praise and be as over the top as you can, I would not use treats as you could encourage spitting to get reward. The lead works as long as the dog keeps holding, I like to get on the dog quick and a confined hall that the dog cannot get around or away from you as you throw against a dead end or closed door work for me. But their is as many methods to try alleviate the picking issue but this is a quick one that can work in certain types of dog who pick but do not want to play give and take.
