The wind drifting over the waves gently brushes my cheeks. Birds tinted in shades of blue, their beautiful calls resounding. Ripples breaking against the rugged shore perform the dance of azure waves. This work was composed in 1992 as a commission from the Tokyo Shakuhachi Ensemble and was premiered at their 10th regular concert by Seizan Sakata (shakuhachi) and Yuko Yokoyama (koto). The word Hekirou refers to “clear ripples of blue-green waves.” The piece opens with a koto solo evoking the motion of waves. Gradually, a principal theme shared by the shakuhachi and koto is introduced, then expanded and developed. In the middle section, a calm dialogue between the two instruments unfolds, followed by a delicate yet powerful cadenza. Variations of the opening theme return thereafter, and in the concluding section the two instruments engage competitively, building to a climactic close.
