The Last Nazareno Coverage of CNN Philippines | Newsroom Ngayon Kasama si Ruth Cabal (Jan. 9, 2024)

📽 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗡𝗮𝘇𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗡𝗡 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 (𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰) January 9, 2024 marked CNN Philippines’ final coverage of the annual Feast of the Black Nazarene especially the Traslacion, the grand procession of the image of Jesus Nazareno. For the 3:00 PM newscast, I executive produced "Newsroom Ngayon," anchored by veteran journalist Ms. Ruth Anna Cabal. I wrote the Take 1 or banner story as well as Take 2, where we laid out the positions of our reporters on the ground. One of the biggest challenges of the mid-afternoon newscast was the lack of real-time information on the exact location of the andas (carriage) as mobile signals across Manila were jammed where our correspondents were stationed. Because of this, the team had to rely heavily on strong pre-taped visuals and footage gathered earlier in the day as well as trickles of information gathered by the news desk. CNN Philippines correspondent Rex Remitio delivered some of the most compelling and visually striking images—a sea of devotees—while doing a standupper with the andas and the Black Nazarene behind him. Despite the intense Traslacion coverage, we still had to fit in the program’s public service component, "Serbisyo Ngayon." Our guest that day, seen in the final part of this video clip, was then-Bureau of Internal Revenue Commissioner Romeo Lumagui Jr. January 9 on Channel 9. This remains one of the most memorable special coverages I have handled. Little did we know at the time that this would be our final one—just a few days later, CNN Philippines signed off for good.
