Another first for 2023. Local angler Ruth had never caught a salmon on a loch before. Prevailing weather conditions were definitely challenging, a strong easterly wind with intermittent hail storms, set the tone for the day. When Ruth set up her rod, nothing seemed untoward. Little did she know that at some point in the distant past, the end of the floating line on her reel, must have passed under another coil, to develop a bind that travelled deep into the backing, lurking silently, waiting to emerge at the most inopportune moment. That moment arose whilst the 10lb sealiced salmon, made a mad dash to get back to the sea. Luckily, I was able to remove the spool from the reel, unwind and untangle the bind, then replace the spool back into the reel, just as the salmon decided to embark upon another significant run, in an easterly direction. After a few more heart stopping moments when the fish seemed to have thrown the hook, Ruth brought the fish safely to the net. An outstanding achievement at the best of times but given the prevailing weather, it was a very worthy reward for her perseverance in the bone chilling conditions. Happy days ;)
