We join Roger as he is about to get tough with one of his Fatsia Japonica plants for a severe spring prune! This Fatsia has started to suffer from some black spot problems over the last few years - probably because of a combination of Frost damage, insect damage and maybe some fungal disease. The plant itself doesn't seem that bothered by the problem and looks lovely most of the year, with lush summer leaves and bunches of white flowers in autumn - but this spring the plant looks untidy - so after growing happily for almost 20 years in our welsh garden it is time for a hard prune! Roger explains how and why we prune in spring, and then goes on to explain and show how we add high potash fertilizer to the soil to encourage some strong, resilient new growth which will look great but also be able to resist some pest and disease problems, as well as toughening up the cell walls to help the plant cope with any cold winter weather. The plant should put on lots of fresh new growth over the coming months so we plan to revisit the Fatsia in summer for an update.
