This was a brilliant race, with some very promising young athletes mixing it with the established Island Games stars. Iolo Hughes (Ynys Môn) was the champion in 2015 and the bronze medallist in 2019, Sam Maher (Jersey) the silver medallist in 2017, and Seumas MacKay (Shetland) was moving up in distance having won the 800 metres titles in 2017 and 2019. MacKay initially led before being passed by Maher, with Hughes going through 400 metres in third place with most of the runners still tightly bunched. On the second lap the field began to stretch, with the same three athletes leading through 800 metres closely followed by Richard Bartram (Guernsey) and three very promising youngsters Sam Perry and Gethin Owen (Isle of Man) and Archie Pearson (Isle of Wight). The pace had been quite fast but not on Games record schedule, but as the athletes went through the bell we were set for a fast and thrilling last 400 metres. Maher still led, but Hughes had moved into second place and was looking menacing followed by MacKay just ahead of Bartram, and Perry was still hanging onto the leading group. As they moved into the back straight Hughes surged past Maher into the lead with MacKay still close behind, and these three were away from the pursuers. With 100 metres to go the race for the gold medal was now between Hughes and MacKay, and the experienced Ynys Môn athlete produced a great finish to cross the line 1.54 seconds in front. It was a brilliant contest, with Sam Maher taking the bronze medal for Jersey. 16-year-old Sam Perry from the Isle of Man also produced a superb finish to overhaul Richard Bartram to take fourth spot with his first sub-four minute clocking, and he has huge potential to star in future Games.
