When Your College Student Is Accused: What Parents Should Do First K Altman Law Webinar When a college student faces allegations of misconduct, the stakes can be immediate and serious. In this webinar, Dr. Amanda Stewart, Director of Student Defense at K Altman Law, is joined by Attorney Monica Garcia, Advisor Mindi Miller, and Assistant Director Robert Wright to walk parents through what to do—and what not to do—when their student is accused. This session explains the three primary categories of higher education allegations: academic dishonesty, student conduct violations, and Title IX matters. The team breaks down how colleges define plagiarism (including “self-plagiarism”), cheating, collaboration violations, housing infractions, alcohol or drug allegations, and behavioral misconduct. They clarify how different processes operate and why even “minor” findings—such as transcript notations—can carry long-term consequences. The webinar also addresses a critical issue: timing. Early statements, reactive communication, or parental intervention without a strategy can significantly impact outcomes. The presenters discuss when silence may protect a student, when advocacy becomes necessary, and how to avoid common mistakes that can unintentionally worsen a case. Whether your student is facing academic integrity allegations, conduct charges, or Title IX concerns, this webinar provides a practical roadmap for responding strategically rather than emotionally. Presented by K Altman Law’s multidisciplinary Student Defense team.
