We recently played a killer lineup of games for Calice Cup 11, and Twin Eagle II was one of the most fun experiences I had during that month. I made it quite far and somehow got myself a top 3 Calice rank but didn't quite nail the ending due to lack of familiarity and focusing on other games during the end of the tourney. With this tourney and Shoot the Baguette 7 now behind us, I was pretty pumped to focus on this game again because it was damn cool! But wait! Isn't this a tankboatplane shmup with FG inputs??? That sounds like something clinically and meticulously designed to piss me off and filter me hard, doesn't it? And yet here I am, loving it! Well, Twin Eagle II has a distinctive ground bombing mechanic to destroy everything (though the attack hitbox is really tiny), item juggling for extra bonuses and temporary powerups, crab juggling and some other silly score stuff like the Vesper City spinner. You can tell that it keeps the spirit of the tankboatplane design but removes a lot of the usual nonsense. No shitty green weapon, no weapon switch items, no powerloss problems, no checkpoints, and the pacing of stages is really interesting. The 9 sub-stages go by relatively fast and even though this is a 30 minute game, it really goes by in a flash! Of course, the other main reason the game is so cool is the style! The music is groovy and hip, the prerendered graphics are goofy but so fitting for the over-the-top and cheesy vibe. The commentator and voice clips are a blast! I didn't even notice when playing for Calice but the operator who gives you instructions and stuff is named Plasmo! Incredible. And the little cutscenes with the news reports or the pilot jumping at the end of the stages are great. If that ain't worth a play then I don't know what to say hahahaha. This is like Air Gallet's crazy and rad cousin. The FG inputs are not necessarily something I love, especially when they fail in the most critical times (I lost a run or two to the final boss because of them), but some of the motions are not too hard to pull off with minimal or no 720° Z-swinging nonsense, and they end up being quite useful. The attacks you can pull off like the sideways sweeping blasts are very handy and strong, not to mention the handy invincibility! There's a neat feeling when destroying a bunch of helis or even mountain rocks at once. You can pull off plenty of these motions and then helper ships spawn to refill your energy bar when it gets too low. Seta ain't stingy here, let's go! Boss fights initially seemed a bit long but special moves with contact damage take good care of them, even the ones that do loop-de-loops to avoid you. I also noticed that you can buffer a special move while a previous one is being used, which is handy though you have to wait the end of the attack to know if you successfully buffered the next one. Each of the 3 stages also lets you choose the stage order for the 3 substages in them, as well as your bomb type. There's only 1 type at first but you get access to one more in each stage. I go with B since it's a convenient and strong fire attack, but it won't give you invincibility (I don't think any of the bombs do) and I feel like it's not instant (I died on the 3-3 boss even though I pressed the bomb button). Bombs can be good when you are in a pinch and don't have enough meter but it's not 100% safe, also for score you sadly want to stockpile as many bombs as possible for the end-of-stage bonus. With some luck you can let the items on the boss kill linger on for a sec and then collect them if they change into bomb refill items, but the window is tight before you lose control of the ship. Since I made it far during Calice, I knew I could get the clear without too many problems, but it still wasn't free. Getting more familiar and comfortable with the stages meant I wasn't using panic-specials all over the place and died more, oops. And when I actually did try to panic-special, I tended to input the motions too fast for them to register. The game told us though : Easy, don't be panic! I learned that during Calice but then unlearned it haha. When you are fighting a boss that throws helis and missiles at you, you start getting nervous for every picosecond you spend not shooting and thus risking a collision heh. This run was free of all the silly early-game deaths that plagued a lot of my attempts, and I actually even stayed on a no-death pace all the way to 3-3 boss. I grabbed the item-based extend very late too, but if that's somehow why I died late, I ain't complaining hehe. The final boss is a lot easier with the strat I grabbed from Maucast's Calice run, but careful not to fuck up the shield move inputs! I had a few attempts such as this one • Twin Eagle II 3.66mil where the missile came out instead multiple times and ruined my day. Thankfully not here! Bingo! Fun fact : Had I had this clear during Calice it would still be rank 3 hahaha. MAME 0.278 30Hz A & B
