인구 2031년 5천296만명 정점…생산가능인구는 내년부터 감소 Korea's population is likely to shrink and the country rapidly become an aging society according to Statistics Korea. Some experts say at this rate, Korea may become the least active country among OECD. Oh Jung-hee shares with us Statistics Korea's report on the nation's long-tem demographics stretching to 2065. Korea's population is set to decrease, while the country is rapidly becoming an aging society. Statistics Korea's report on Korea's long-term demographics until 2065 says,... the total population is to peak at just below the 53 million mark in 2031 and start decreasing. 2045 will be the last year to see a population of over 50 million,... and the figure will eventually dip to 43 million by 2065. The number of newly born babies in 2065 will be only 60-percent of today's,... dropping from 430-thousand in 2015 to 260-thousand by 2065. Coming along with the concerning low birth rate will be a diminished working age population, which is at its highest this year. The working age population now stands at 37 million, or 73-percent of the total population, and it will start decreasing next year, eventually reaching only 26 million, or less than 50-percent in 2065. Conversely, the rate of senior citizens will rise rapidly, from today's 13-percent to 20-percent in 2026 and eventually to over 40-percent in 2065. "Until now, the working age population has been growing along with the elderly population. But starting next year, the working age population will start decreasing, while the elderly population will continue to grow. The upcoming five years will be very different from the past five years." In addition, the median age in Korea is expected to rise from last year's 40.9 to 58.7 by 2065. If the projections are correct, experts are expecting Korea to become the least active country among OECD members by 2065, with the lowest rate of working age population and the highest rate of elderly population in the OECD.
