Both Doseki and Santetsu were disciples of Honinbo Sansa, the first Meijin. Nakamura Dōseki (中村道碩, 1582-1630) succeeded Honinbō Sansa as the second Meijin. Records indicate that in the Keicho era (1596-1615), Sansa, Rigen, and Doseki were summoned to the imperial court, aristocratic residences, and Edo Castle to play Go in the presence of members of the noble and samurai classes. These matches are thought to be a predecessor of Castle Go (Oshirogo). Yasui Santetsu (安井 算哲, 1590-1652) became the first leader of the Yasui school. He was said to have played over a hundred games against Doseki, with close to 50 game records surviving to this day. Santetsu played with Black, the one-stone handicap to Meijin indicating that he was ranked 7-dan. Santetsu had an intense fighting style, with Dōseki remarking, "Even if I win, I feel like my life was in danger."
