Hard Words #6 froid Don't make the mistake that many Anglo-American speakers make with this word. If you don't get the French r in there, you could be saying “liver” instead of “cold”! Of course, it is that troublesome r that trips up the non-French speaker. People often say that the French r is harsh or guttural or “like gargling”, but no. It is actually the softest of the French consonants.
