(13 Sep 1998) Hebrew/Eng/Nat Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called U-S President Bill Clinton a friend on Sunday and said he hoped the American leader would survive the Monica Lewinsky scandal that could lead to impeachment. There was support also from Leah Rabin, the widow of former leader Yitzhak Rabin. The country's Sunday newspapers featured splashy headlines and lengthy stories detailing Clinton's actions which were detailed in the Starr report which was released Friday. Israel, a close ally of the United States, was abuzz on Sunday with talk of Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr's report on Bill Clinton's affair with former White House intern Monica Lewinsky. News from Washington dominated the headlines and newscasts. Former Israeli ambassador to the United States Itamar Rabinovich said the scandal could harm the peace process. At a peace rally in Tel Aviv, the widow of former Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin echoed the same sentiment. SOUNDBITE: (English) "President Clinton, we have been watching you through these very very difficult days, we pray for you, we love you, and we hope that you will overcome these difficult days and stay as the wonderful, maybe most wonderful president of the United States and the president of the world, and the world needs you and all the wonderful things you can do for them."
