Smith coined the term “racial battle fatigue” (https://goo.gl/NIdbRI) and authored a paper entitled, “Challenging Racial Battle Fatigue.” Smith concluded that African American are in a constant state of worry, they have trouble concentrating, they are easily fatigued, and even develop headaches when navigating personal and professional spaces that have historically favored white people. Such stress can go beyond just one's workplace and can cripple marriages and social lives.
