We Are Assyrian by Niran Jacob These are my people and though they don't know me, we are all fruit of the same tree. Divided by time, but linked by past. Bound by blood, our story is my task. The first to gather, the first to civilize, monuments of great achievement, all but fossilized. Ravaged by war and tainted by others, our homeland forsaken, never to recover. Many times we tried to reclaim what was lost, but we were suppressed and stomped down at a great cost. The soldiers descended, a solid marching mass, to extinguish our kind, no mercy would pass. Priests were skinned, women were raped. The running nor fleeing could escape this fate. Bodies lay broken, pile upon pile, skin blackened by sun, the dead defiled. Screams were silenced, children were trampled. Red drop by red drop, our nation dismantled. They tried to change us, to melt our resolve, but we kept true to our faith, we would not dissolve. Ancient families torn, we wandered apart. Spreading out through the world, we carried aching hearts. So many were lost, abandoned and left behind. Souls were scarred, identities defined. We found new homes, and there we thrived, but no matter our health, our hearts felt deprived. It seems inevitable, history must repeat. Now, more than ever, we cannot retreat. Pushed beyond reason, they say “Convert or die!” The answer is no, our faith we can't deny. Town by town, the darkness devours, while leaders sit idle, wasting the hours. Villages are ravaged, thousands of years erased, Forced to flee, families are laid waste. Brothers and sisters, our hearts go with you, No surrender, stand your ground and keep true. These are our people, this plight moves us all. We are Assyrians, together we stand tall.
