In this video we spend one day at Guadalupe Mountain National Park exploring several different hiking areas. Now entering Texas! Guadalupe Mountain National Park is just 50 miles from Carlsbad, NM. We found so many surprising gems here at this National Park. We started at the Guadalupe Mountain National Park Visitor Center. From there we hike to the Pinery Butterfield Stage Station Ruins. This is a very easy hike from the visitor center that is paved. Then we hike to the Pine Springs Campground to the main trailhead for Guadalupe Peak, El Capitan Trail, The Bowl, and Devil's Hall Trail. We venture up the trail to Guadalupe Trail about 1/2 mile, but we didn't have the time or energy to complete this hike as we were planning to visit other areas of the park. The Guadalupe Peak Trail winds through piñon pine and Douglas-fir forests as it ascends over 3,000 feet to the summit of Guadalupe Peak, - the tallest peak in Texas. Next we head over to the Frijoles Ranch Stop. We were greeted by a lovely picnic area with several covered picnic tables. There is no where to eat anywhere close to this National Park, so you must remember to pack a lunch. We were pleasantly surprised by the Frijoles Ranch cultural museum at this stop. This ranch includes several buildings and represents the most complete early ranching operation in the Guadalupe Mountains. It was originally constructed in 1876. The ranch buildings were used by the National Park Service as employee residence and utility buildings from 1969 to 1980. From 1983 to 1991 the house was a Park Service operations center. The house was restored in 1992 and is an interpretive center and museum, known as the Frijole Ranch Cultural Museum. Entry to the buildings was closed on the day we visited. This area was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. From this stop we find the trailhead to Smith Spring and it passes by the Manzanita spring that was used by the ranch occupants. This spring was a delightful oasis after what seemed like a long hike. The Smith Spring Loop is paved from Frijole Ranch to Manzanita Spring. It then ascends 402 feet along a maintained trail to the heavily vegetated and lovely Smith Spring.
